7 Must-See Sites in the Florida Keys!

So you’re planning a trip to Miami, Florida. You’re probably going to visit the famous Florida Keys, am I right? From Key Largo to Key West, there are so many cool places to visit along the Keys! How do you know what to stop for? No worries — I’ve got you covered. Here’s my guide to the most fascinating sights of the Florida Keys: 7 unique features guaranteed to make your trip unforgettable!

Dolphin Research Center
Remember Flipper, the bottlenose dolphin with her own television show? She was trained in the Florida Keys! Before she became a TV superstar in the 60s, researchers taught her to perform tricks on command. Over fifty years later and there’s still plenty of dolphin shows to catch!

Ernest Hemingway’s Home
Anyone who’s ever read The Old Man and the Sea can tell that Hemingway’s writing was inspired by the warm waters of the Atlantic at Key West. Hemingway kept a ton of cats… and the descendents of his pets still roam the property to this day! Cat lovers, rejoice!

Big Betsy
Not every town has its own 40-foot long lobster statue! Big Betsy, molded and painted with intricate detail, celebrates the importance of marine life in Rain Barrel Village. She also makes a quirky photo opportunity!

The Little White House
Harry S. Truman, president of the United States from 1945 to 1953, was told by his doctor to spend time in a warm climate for his health. (Don’t we all wish our doctors said the same thing?) While he lived in his tropical vacation home, his correspondence was literally postmarked from “The White House, Key West, Florida."

Seven Mile Bridge
The best selling point of the Florida Keys is the ocean… and you’ll get to see plenty of it as you drive across Seven Mile Bridge. Connecting the Middle Keys to the Lower Keys, this bridge is a serene drive surrounded by gentle waves.

Key West Lighthouse
Built in 1825, this lighthouse no longer works, but it has been restored to its original look. Visitors can climb to the top of the perfectly preserved tower to look out at the same view of the Florida Keys that the keepers would have seen nearly two hundred years ago. The light itself was powered by gas, like a giant antique lantern!

Fred the Tree
It might be surprising that one of the most beloved monuments in the Florida Keys is… a tree. What makes Fred unique? Instead of growing out of the earth, this tree managed to grow from concrete… in the middle of Seven Mile Bridge! Inspirational, right? Fred’s endurance in the face of Hurricane Irma has raised him to celebrity status among locals

Self-guided driving tour apps!
You might be thinking... “How do I make sure I visit these sites during my trip?” Well, it’s easy! Check out this great self-guided driving tour of the Florida Keys - for
- Apple and
- Android .
It’s a GPS-triggered narrated tour, so it acts just like a personal tour guide sitting in your passenger seat. The tour covers these 7 highlights plus lots more. It also has great beach recs which I haven’t covered here! The self-guided tour works whether you’re staying in Miami or on the Keys. The tour officially starts from Key Largo and takes you all the way down to Key West, the southernmost point in the United States– all in less than two hours! But you can start/stop it at any point along the route and make your own tour out of it.

Bored at home due to Coronavirus quarantine? Try a local self-guided scenic drive/walk.

So, you’re stuck in the house due to precautions related to COVID-19, the coronavirus. You’re working from home, all the upcoming events you were looking forward to having been canceled, and the gym’s closed. Are the people you live with getting on your nerves? Could you use an escape for a few hours? Have you already finished every show on Netflix and need to get some fresh air? Do you just need a distraction from all the bad news flowing in from Twitter? Then there’s no better time to go for a drive!

Try taking a self-guided driving tour of your local area. Self-guided tours like these allow for a change of scenery while avoiding direct contact with the public. It’s easy to use– just install the app on your phone and pick a tour. Walk or drive along the recommended route and a narrator will automatically tell you about the interesting sights you’re seeing. From the safety of your car, you can soak in the history, geography, architecture, and culture of your local scenic area, while maintaining healthy social distancing. Each tour features over an hour of fascinating facts, highlighting all the coolest stuff for you along the way.

The best part? A self-guided tour is entirely flexible! With enough gas in the tank, you can immerse yourself in the splendor of your surroundings for an afternoon. Many tourist destinations may be closed for business during this time, but the roads will still be open for travel. No need to worry about closing times or ticket prices– this is one tour where YOU make the schedule. Check out the scenic self-guided tours in your neighborhood here.

If you do leave the car to grab a snack or take a picture, be sure to follow the CDC guidelines to protect yourself from infection: avoid touching your eyes and mouth, try not to get within six feet of anyone else, and wash your hands often. (It’s not a bad idea to keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in your car even when there’s NOT a public health crisis.)

Living under quarantine doesn’t have to be boring! If there’s a scenic detour that you’ve never had the time to take, now’s your chance to explore. Take advantage of your newfound freedom and give your car some exercise with a self-guided tour!
